Quarriers, Cardinals, Bulldogs begin outdoor track and field season

The Dell Rapids, Baltic and St. Mary outdoor track seasons are now in full swing. All three schools competed at the Jesse James meet in Garretson on Saturday, and St. Mary senior Ella Heinitz shattered records in the process.

The mile relay team of Madala Hansen, Ella Heinitz, Maya Heinitz and Josie Baumberger set a new St. Mary school record, breaking the old mark by eight seconds at the Menno Relays on Thursday, April 15, 2021.

Heinitz got her hot start in the outdoor season underway earlier in the week and won three events and broke three school records as well at the Menno Relays on Thursday. She won the 100 (12.54 seconds), 200 (26.24) and was a member of the mile relay team that set the new school mark of 4:17.5. Along with Heinitz, members of the mile relay team include Madala Hansen, Josie Baumberger and Maya Heinitz. the 4:17.5 mark beat the old school record by eight seconds.

The record in the 200 was made even more significant as Heinitz broke the 14-year old meet record held by Emma Erickson of Gayville-Volin. Erickson went on to become an All-American at the University of South Dakota and graduated in 2008 as a national champion in the 800.

Two other school records were set in Menno by senior Max Heber, who won the javelin with a throw of 116-7. Freshmen Jaycee Tebay finished 2nd in the javelin with a  throw of 83-8, also a school record.

The Menno meet was a great start, but Heinitz wasn’t done there. Two days later in Garretson, she again set new school marks in the 100 (12.24) and 200 (25.34). Both of those times are ranked No. 1 in Class B.

Jesse James meet in Garretson

Dells, Baltic and St. Mary all competed in the Jesse James meet in Garretson on Saturday. The Dell Rapids boys had the best team scoring of the group, finishing third with 69.5 points. Baltic was fifth (59.5) and St. Mary eighth (26). Sioux Falls Christian won the boys team title with 275.5 points.

The sprint medley on the boys side was the highlight for area teams. Baltic won the event in a time of 3:47.40 with Payton Anderson, Brady Hookie, Alex Haagenson and Bodie Murray. Dell Rapids was second with Ryler Evans, Jade Anstine, Josh Fletcher and Owen Nelson in a time of 4:01.90.

Logan Anderson of Dell Rapids also had a solid day winning the 1600 in a time of 4:58.00 and finishing second in the 800 at 2:08.20.

On the field side, Dells’ Danek Hilmar won the high jump at 6-00.00, and Gunnar Chambly won the discuss with a throw of 123-00. Hookie was second for Baltic in the triple jump at 37.09.00.

Sioux Falls Christian also won the girls meet with 167 total points. St. Mary was sixth (57.5), Baltic seventh (31) and Dell Rapids eighth (23.5).

The girls discuss throw was one by Jaycee Tebay of St. Mary with a throw of 98-11.
