Dells Rapids senior Jacob Vogel became just the second wrestler in team history to win an individual wrestling title Saturday in Rapid City. Vogel defeated Brandon Valley’s Alex Mentzer 7-2 in the championship match at 132 pounds to claim the title. Vogel cruised through the tournament, defeating Vermillion’s Nick Roob in the opening round by a 7-0 decision before winning by fall over Harrisburg’s Peyton Tryon in the quarterfinal round. He then got a 7-2 win over Pierre’s Kahlor Hindman in the semifinals before taking the title over Mentzer in the finals.
“The way he works and the way he handles himself, he deserved that state championship,” Dell Rapids coach Craig Jorgensen said. “He put the time and effort in and good things happened. I had a ton of coaches come up and were very happy for him. You know you’re doing the right thing when other teams come up and congratulate you.”
Other Dell Rapids wrestlers to win their final match on championship Saturday included Zach McKee at 145 pounds. McKee finished third for the Quarriers with a 9-4 decision over Robby Edberg of West Central. Andrew Weiland placed fifth for the Quarriers with a 6-2 decision over Mason Schrempp of Aberdeen Central.
“Zach McKee had probably the best tournament he could put together. He wrestled great, and coming back to get third was wonderful for him,” Jorgensen said. “Andrew probably had the best tournament of his career. We had a great tournament. Obviously we wished a few others could have got on the podium, but we really wrestled well.”
Dell Rapids finished 13th in the tournament out of 30 teams competing in Class A. Jorgensen said the team’s goal was to finish in the top 12, but they fell just 1.5 points short of that.

Dells and St. Mary boys prepare for playoffs
Dell Rapids enters the post-season as the No. 2 seed in Region 3A. The Quarriers will play the winner of Tuesday’s Baltic vs. West Central game on Friday night in Dell Rapids. The winner of that game will head to the SoDak 16 on Tuesday, March 9.
Getting an opening round bye is big for Dell Rapids, according to head coach Jason Fersdahl. Despite entering the post-season on a three-game winning streak, Fersdahl said the Quarriers need the extra days off to get healthy.
“We’ve been a little beat up the last couple of weeks, so getting the bye was pretty big for us,” Fersdahl said. “We need to get bodies rested and healed up.”
Dells (14-6) defeated Sisseton by four on Feb. 16, Lennox by five on Feb. 19 and Garretson by eight on Feb. 22.
“Those were all grind-it-out kind of games,” Fersdahl said. “But that’s what you need going into the post-season.”
Cardinals hoping for first state tourney appearance in 16 years – St. Mary enters the post-season as the No. 3 seed in Region 4B. The Cardinals (16-4) have won 11 of their last 12 regular season games, and if they defeat Chester Area on March 2, St. Mary will likely play No. 2 Hanson for the right to play in the Class B SoDak 16. That game is scheduled for March 5 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
St. Mary did not play Hanson in the regular season, but the Beavers (15-5) also enter the playoffs on a hot streak, winners of nine of their last 10.
