Six more coronavirus deaths reported in South Dakota

Six more people have died of the coronavirus in South Dakota, the highest one-day death toll since the pandemic began in the state.

South Dakota has a total of 107 COVID-19 deaths, according to the South Dakota Department of Health. 

Two people who died were Hughes County residents, one was a Minnehaha County resident and three were Pennington County residents. Two were women and four were men. Two people who died were in their 30s, one was in their 60s and three were in the 80+ age range, according to the state health department.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases increased by 65 on Friday. South Dakota has a total of 7,401 COVID-19 cases, according to the state health department. That doesn’t include people who show symptoms or are asymptomatic but are not tested. A total of 1,234 test results were reported on Friday and the positive rate for coronavirus tests on Friday was 5.3%.

The state has 886 active COVID-19 cases, according to the state health department. Recoveries statewide increased to 6,408. The state health department says 726 total people have been hospitalized during the pandemic, and 65 are currently hospitalized.

Coronavirus patients are occupying 3% of staffed hospital beds in the state while 51% of hospital beds are available, according to the state health department. Coronavirus patients are occupying 5% of intensive care unit beds, and 27% of ICU beds are available. Six percent of ventilators are being used by coronavirus patients while 76% of the state’s ventilator capacity is available.

Cases in Minnehaha County increased by 15 to a total of 3,738, and Lincoln County’s cases increased by three to a total of 384 cases, according to the state health department. Of the cases, 3,448 have recovered in Minnehaha County and 340 cases have recovered in Lincoln County. The death toll in Minnehaha County is now at 60 and the number of deaths in Lincoln County remains at one.

Pennington and Union counties each increased by eight cases on Friday, for a total of 624 cases in Pennington and 148 cases in Union, according to the health department. Dewey County had an increase of five cases to 33 total cases.

Brookings, Lyman and Todd counties’ cases increased by four each to 90 total cases in Brookings, 84 total cases in Lyman and 65 total cases in Todd.

Lake County’s total cases was 26 after an increase of three on Friday. 

Counties that increased by two cases each were Brown County for 354 total cases and Codington for 92 total cases, according to the health department.
